Calcium chloride is an ionic compound of calcium and chloride. It is highly soluble in water and it is deliquescent. It is a salt that is solid at room temperature, and it behaves as a typical ionic halide. It has several common applications such as brine for refrigeration plants, ice and dust control on roads, and in cement. It can be produced directly from limestone, but large amounts are also produced as a by-product of the Solvay process. Because of its hygroscopic nature, it must be kept in tightly-sealed containers.

1. Desiccants for gases, petroleum, organic solvents (such as alcohols, ethers, etc.), and preservatives for items.
2. Used in the chemical industry to manufacture metal calcium, and various calcium salts.
3.Used as an antifreeze in the construction industry to accelerate concrete hardening and increase the cold resistance of building mortar.
4.Used as a culture medium for haploid breeding in the microbial industry.
5.In analytical chemistry, it is used to determine the carbon content of steel, blood glucose, serum inorganic phosphorus and serum alkaline phosphatase activity.
6.Used as a fire retardant for fabrics, a defogger for seaports, a dust collector for road surfaces, and a boiler water treatment agent. It can also prevent coal from dusting.
7.Used to prevent the production of explosive coal powder in mines.
8.Used as a chelating agent and solidifying agent in the food industry, such as a coagulant for canned goods and bean products.
