Magnesium oxide (chemical formula: MgO) is an oxide of magnesium, an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in the form of periclase in nature and is a raw material for magnesium smelting. 

Magnesium oxide has high fire resistance and insulation properties. After being burned at high temperatures above 1000 ºC, it can transform into crystals. When it reaches 1500-2000 ° C, it becomes dead burned magnesium oxide (also known as magnesia sand) or sintered magnesium oxide.
