Usage
1. The main application of potassium sulfate is as a fertilizer. K2SO4 does not contain chloride, and chloride is harmful to certain crops.
2. For these crops, potassium sulfate is the preferred fertilizer, including tobacco and some fruits and vegetables. If the chloride accumulated in the irrigation water is excessive, those less sensitive crops may still need potassium sulfate to achieve the best growth effect.
3. Coarse salt is occasionally used in glass manufacturing. Potassium sulfate is also used as a deflagration inhibitor in the propellant charge of artillery. It can reduce muzzle flash, backfire phenomena, and explosion overpressure.
4. It is sometimes used as an alternative abrasive medium, similar to sodium carbonate (soda) used in sandblasting treatment, because it is harder in texture and also has water solubility.
5. Potassium sulfate can also be used in fireworks products to produce purple flames.
