Magnesium chloride hexahydrate, also known as water chlorite, has the chemical formula MgCl2 · 6H2O. Colorless crystal, columnar or needle shaped, with a bitter taste, appearing as white flakes, granules, or powder, commonly known as brine flakes, brine granules, or brine powder. Easy to dissolve in water and ethanol, and prone to deliquescence in high humidity. Hot melt decomposition at 116-118 ºC. Mixing with magnesium oxide and water produces magnesium cement, which is widely used in the production of magnesite materials. Reacts with hydroxides of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals.
